2023 Sardine Sightings: Thousands of birds at Qhora: highly qualified sardine spy Kevin down at Qhora, very deep down on the Transkei Wild Coast, has sent in a voice report!
It’s all a whole lot more positive than last week’s instalment. Birds and gamefish are very active down that way as of today. But let’s let Kevin tell us the stories first-hand…from his vantage point, which is nearer the southern extreme of the action as it starts to make its way northwards.
Over to Kevin…
Thank you Kevin in Qhora and Salt Fishing South Africa for being so quick with your 2023 sardine sightings reports. Join Salt Fishing South Africa on Facey to stay up to date with all things fishing and conservation.
As Kevin just pointed out, these pockets of action are caused by pilot shoals that fragment off the main shoal and go it ‘alone’. Some of them spurt ahead and right into the throngs of gamefish and other members of the aquatic animal kingdom who are all waiting in ambush. Gannets by the gazillion. Dolphins and whales. Sharks and gamefish. Seals and rays. Everybody comes to this party.
The shoals follow the very same pattern each year. Starting early and way down in Port Alfred and East London areas. Then slowly they make their way up, followed by the main shoal a few weeks behind them. If you would like to really get a feel for how this all works, we have the exact right tools for you…The Sardine News Sightings Maps!
