14 June 2023 Sardine Action down South: After a very slow start to the day, some pics and videos are filtering through.

10 am – Kevin in the Transkei has been on patrol between Hole-in-Wall and his base in Qhora, near Mazeppa Bay this morning. He deduces that the first shoals are now done and dusted. And that he is gonna intercept the main shoal when it hits Mazeppa Bay. Possibly today.

Noon – a netting boat is buzzing around in the bay in Port Edward chasing after a few scattered shoals coming past. These sardines have been through hell already as they already ran the gauntlet through the Transkei. They are very nervous and skittish. This is the nature of all these smaller pilot shoals at this stage of the run. Difficult to throw a net around them when they move so fast.

1 PM – small, even tiny, shoals are speeding up the coast. They are being spotted and chased right now. Uvongo. St. Mikes…otherwise still a very quiet day.

2 PM – I gave Ant Nel in Port Edward a buzz, and he sent me this…’Out at sea, wall to wall earlier between Spiros and lighthouse beyond netting range’. So, there are heaps of sardines out deep, heading north right now They could pitch up at ANY beach in Souther KZN tomorrow. Maybe even Durban…
