Weekly Spearfishing by Jason Heyne

Jason is always on time with his Friday reports, but they just miss the 11am publishing each Friday of The Sardine News by email. So, once again, a slightly belated report and forecast from Jason…our man under the KZN water…

“The diving conditions this week have been surprisingly good after all the rain and storms on the weekend. The sea settled nicely on Wednesday and is still good today(Friday). Saturday a light north east blows during the day and the swell runs at 1.5m. Sunday a moderate south westerly blows with the swell running smaller at 1.3m. The wave period will pick up to 16 seconds so expect some big sets. Hard to say which day will be better for a dive but I’m leaning towards Saturday. Viz was reported north and south today. Daga salmon, Garrick and GT’s are still here with brusher putting in a good appearance both north and south. We will be having our annual shorediving species competition on the 15th of October and it’s going to be a great event. Check the poster for details. Hope to see all of you there. As always dive safe and straight spears.

Report on spearfishing KZN

Report on spearfishing KZN

Our trusty scribe and recorder of spearfishing news weekly – Jason Heyne drops in with this weeks Report on spearfishing KZN.

The diving conditions this week were average for this time of year.

Having spring tide on spring day was quite something. The east blew a bit this week but if you got in early the conditions were ok.
The sea settled beautifully today in the durban area with viz reported south and north.
Saturday through to Sunday afternoon there is negligible swell and zip wind. A South West blows on Sunday afternoon. The daga salmon and brusher are definitely on the south coast.
So it looks like Saturday all day and Sunday morning are prime for a dive. As always dive safe and straight spears.

Spearfishing news from KZN

Spearfishing news from KZN

By Jason Heyne

Diving conditions this week have been abysmal.
Clean water did push in at certain spots but an average of 2m surf kept the fish safe.
The sea did flatten out nicely today (Friday) and will be super flat Saturday and Sunday with a light offshore blowing Saturday morning switching to a light south West later in the afternoon till Sunday morning. Durban and surrounding areas were starting to clean up today. Hopefully some cleaner water will push in over the weekend. With all the rivers having opened into the sea there should be an abundance of sprats around which will attract gamefish in numbers. As always dive safe and straight spears.

Spearfishing also cut off by the low

Jason Heyne reports in…

The diving conditions this week have been well below average.
A big cutoff low hit the KZN coastline this week and literally obliterated the sea. Just about every river up and down the coastline is spewing brown flood water into the sea. Clean water is out there but its kilometres out to sea. A moderate south west blows Saturday with a fair size swell running at 2.5m. Sunday a lite offshore blows in the morning switching to a light east in the afternoon with the swell at 2.5m. So not much chance of a dive this weekend unless you have a brave skipper and look far offshore Sunday morning. As always dive safe and straight spears.

Last weekend Spearfishing Report by Jason Heyne

Jason Heyne got his weekend spearfishing report in on time, but we are a few days late again, so here it is…thank you Jason.

The conditions this week were great to start with but detiorated during the week with some big swell today (friday) .
I have had no decent viz reports today. We have several low pressure systems sitting in the southern Atlantic and combimed with spring tides and a cyclone off Madagascar we have really bad weather on the way. This weekend looks a blowout for diving with big swell still hitting the north and south coasts tomorrow we have a late south west blowing from mid day right through to Sunday midday. Swell is gonna be on the larger side so caution is advised on entry and launch. Great weekend to catch up with the family. The vidal comp was a blast. Well done kobus delport on getting a 16 kg wahoo for 1st place. Thanks again to our generous sponsors Freedivers International and Rob Allen without you guys the comp wouldn’t be half of what it is. From Monday we will be experiencing large cyclone surf for a few days. Snoek garrick and daga salmon are around with the odd geelbek and grunter being landed. As always dive safe and straight spears.
