Cracker diving conditions have arrived! Spearfishing KZN by Jason Heyne
Well last week may have been a bit murky and rough, but this week it is all but that! Jason reports in on the seasonal Poenskop and Brusher (Black and White Steenbras), and the fantastic conditions headed our way. – Xona
The diving conditions this week have been below average. Some decent brusher and poensies have been coming out with some small garrick around. Saturday a moderate south West blows with the swell starting at 1.7m and dropping off with the wind later in the day to 1.2m. Sunday a light onshore blows with minimal swell. So Sunday is looking tops for a dive. Well done to Travis for getting club merit fish of the week a 5.1kg geelbek and to Brod for getting biggest fish of the week a cracking 18kg poensie on a shore dive! As always dive safe and straight spears
Jaco Blignaut wins gold at Spearfishing Nationals
Jason Heyne reports in that Jaco Blignaut has taken the nationals again! And a few other things from under the waves up and down the KZN spearfishing coast.
The diving conditions were OK Saturday and Sunday then swell and wind every day made for an upset sea. Couta garrick and snoek are around and plenty other gamefish should be around as well because the sardines have arrived. Saturday a light offshore blows in the morning switching to a light to moderate north east in the afternoon with swell starting at 2.2 m and settling down to 1.5m later in the day. Sunday a light offshore blows in the morning with negligible wind later on and small 1.3m swell. So it looks like Sunday is a green light for a dive. Fish of the week goes to Kobus Delport with a 12.5kg garrick which also won him biggest gamefish at the SAUFF comp on the weekend. Well done to our KZN divers who cleaned up at Nationals. Well done Jaco Blignaut for placing 1st in individual event. Thank-you Freedivers and Rob Allen for sponsoring gear! As always dive safe and straight spears.
King Mackeral dominating underwater – KZN Spearfishing
” Jason Heyne reporting that king mackeral are still around and dominating everyones lives…” Xona
The diving conditions this week have been epic. Garrick have arrived, snoek are around in numbers and shoal cuda are thick. Saturday the wind blows offshore in the morning switching to a light to moderate north east in the afternoon with the swell picking up from 1m in the morning to 1.5m in the afternoon. Sunday morning the wind blows offshore switching to a moderate south West in the afternoon and the swell runs at 1.3m throughout the day. Viz was reported north and south coast today. So Saturday and Sunday morning look great for a dive. Well done to Duran Richardson for getting fish of the week a cuda of 19kg on a shore dive! As always dive safe and straight spears.
Spearfishing Vilankulos
Spearfishing Vilankulos: spearguns are banned in the Bazaruto Archipelago but if you bang out between the islands and turn right, you are in the clear! The very clear.
As the Mozambique current rubs up against the continental shelf literally a few hundred metres from the island barrier, it brings with it a host of huge predator fish. Marlin and sailfish. Wahoo and King Mackerel. Amberjack and Kingfish. Tuna and Cobia…including sharks btw.
Along this shelf, are dotted about pinnacles, some coming right up to 8 metres or less, some dropping off to the distant deep. Baitballs are commonplace, and there are very many spots to hunt fish. Including the shallows and surf zone, but mainly it’s the deeper reefs along the 20-metre contour.
Accommodation is self-catering, right on the beach. Boats out front. Our camp is 6kms out of Vilankulos town. Overlooking Bazaruto, Benguerra and Margaruque.
This price is for 7 days and 6 nights. You have the boat and guide for 35 hours in total. That’s a lot of time out there, you can also use the boat for going to town, or the islands (you need to pay R200 per person each day we go into the reserve). Extra boat hours are available.
Bring all your own equipment and spares. You will need longer guns, strings, and ropes. Heavier duty stuff that can hold onto the bigger fish we are going to encounter.
This tour is available from August through November each year. Pricing is per person. If you have somebody with you, a discount will apply. Get in touch and we can work it out.

Winter spearfishing is hot as hell
Jason Heyne on the boil after his sailfish shot last week on Aliwal Shoal, reports in with more intel from what goes on under the water. Evidently it’s wahoo, big couta, sailfish and garrick – true winter gamefish here, that are causing all the commotion.
Well the diving conditions this week have been well below average unless you could get on a boat and I dive deeper spots like Aliwal shoal. Plenty wahoo around with the odd king mackerel and sailfish coming out. Saturday the swell drops to 1.8m with a North West offshore wind blowing in the morning switching to a moderate south West during the morning. Sunday the south West picks up speed with the swell running at over 2m. So there may be a small gap Saturday morning for a dive. As always dive safe and straight spears.
Thank you Jason and keep up the good work!
If you want to do some spearfishing this winter, get in touch on umzimkulu@gmail.com and let’s put something together – Mozambique or South Africa – we got it covered.
