Big Couta season 2019 is underway

The 2019 Big Couta season has kicked in with this nice couta of about 22kgs by Brian Lange off the Umzimkulu in March 2019.

Big Couta season 2019 is underway

It’s a fantastic time to be on the warmer East Coast of Southern Africa right now. The weather calms right down. The offshores start. The water warms right up. If only the rain would stay away!

But these are the exact conditions that bring the big couta to our waters!

From the Transkei all the way north, this is the time the really big fish, the “crocodile couta”, come alive.

And there are a handful of reefs, scattered along the backline, that regularly produce these big fish. Year after year, these fish come back to the same spots. And each year a handful of lucky anglers get their trophy couta.

Not that these fish are easy to catch.

Far from it. The reason only a handful come out each year,is because you need a really good bait, in really good water, at the exact right time – for it all to come together.

But that first Tesla speed run, rips the line of your reel. And the ratchet screams like you never though it could. This is the time to back off your drag, down to a kilogram or so, as the line peeling off into the water and bending with resistance, increases the pressure at the hooks by a large factor. Then when that fish stops, push the drag back to two or three kilos at the max, and get that line back.

As soon as you get him close, and he sees the boat – after a good rest, he will tear off again. And once more usually.

This is not the time to relax however, as the fish’s distress signals and erratic behaviour would have called sharks from all over the place by now.

Couta are difficult fish to release easily, but if you can get him by the tail or put a lip gaff in the right place (being so careful of the flailing hooks), get that tag in, measurement done and photograph taken. Chuck the guy back as you would a torpedo to give him some momentum as he re-enters the realm of the shark. If your fish is not in prime condition, rather don’t tag and release.

Enjoy a gallery of crocodile sized couta all caught within the last few big season s…

Sharks in the Shorebreak! Sardine Report July 2018

Sharks in the Shorebreak! Sardine Report July 2018

Sharks in the Shorebreak! Sardine Report July 2018: It’s been an incredible sardine run this 2018 with images of the good old days seen all over. Sharks right in the shorebreak gorging themselves. Nets filled daily. Spin casters everywhere. Kids with packets. Grannies with washing baskets. Traffic jams for miles!

The sards have featured at literally every beach up and down from Port Edward and even past Durban. They were at Ballito recently! However, some beaches are very popular with the sards – The Sandspit, Pumula, Scottburgh and a few others have seen non-stop action.

Enjoy the shark video submitted by Dez way down on the lower south coast somewhere. Thanks Dez!

Fishing

As usual, the fishing has been a tad slower than what would be expected. The fish are actually everywhere. Yellowfin tuna, couta, snoek and all vie with dolphins and all sorts for the bounty. A good bit of advice from the old timers – don’t fish with sardines in the sardine run!

Shark anglers are having the most fun. The guys down at Port Edward have refined their attack to include drones that drop their baits off way out the back. With amazing results. The controversy over drone use has however also been on the rise.

Spearfishing

And from Jason Heyne, underwater correspondent and veteran spearfisherman…with his report from just before the weekend.

The diving conditions have been average this week with 3 or 4 days being diveable. The sardines down south coast are attracting some decent fish inshore with wahoo, sailfish and daga salmon coming out. Saturday a moderate south west blows all day with the swell running at just a tad over 2m. Sunday the south west continues to blow and it starts dropping off around mid day with a 2m swell running all day. So Saturday early and Sunday afternoon might be diveable. Andrew gets his first saily and fish of the week and Dean gets club merit fish of the week with a decent winter garrick.
We are having our 8th annual crayfish comp on the 4th of August which is always a cracker event. Family welcome at the weigh in at The lapa pool area at Wings Virginia airport. Wors rolls and cash bar. Entry forms available at Freedivers and email umhlangaspearos@gmail.com .
As always dive safe and straight spears
And the very interesting and informative gallery that always comes with Jason’s reporting…

This report was sponsored by Splash Saverite in Port Edward. Right close to the infamous Splash Rock fishing spot, pop in for latest catches and good advice on fishing the KZN South Coast and into the nearby Transkei Wild Coast.

‘Gut ‘n Go’ takes the Hibberdene comp

‘Gut ‘n Go’ takes the Hibberdene comp

Roger Davidson got his son Finlay, and long time fishing compadre, Marc Lange, to crew for him at the annual Hibberdene Skiboat Club Comp, this year.

Its always a fun comp and draws back many loyal locals each year. And visitors. Its traditionally a couta classic type event and some incredible catches are made some years. But definitely not every year. The couta, which are around as can be seen by Jason Heyne’s weekly spearfishing report, just weren’t biting.

But Roger, Finlay and Marc found a few very early morning jube jube Bonnie’s and had them in the spread on Roger’s new boat, Gut n Go, in no time.

The first reel screamed! Couta sounding. But it wasn’t to be. A handsome hard fighting backline yellowfin it was though. One of three nice sized fish they managed to get into the boat. Well big enough to take top honours and a bunch of other goodies. Marc even won the nominated weight prize?!

A cobia was weighed, a nice deep water amberjack, and a few other nice species.

But literally no couta?!

That’s Finley Davison with the 15.2kg fish which was second biggest overall.

The King of the Sea comp was just held this weekend. Photos and reports trickling through. Hibberdene produced the goods and some great fish have been weighed.

KZN Spearos enjoying clear diving conditions

KZN Spearos enjoying clear diving conditions

Clean and clear diving conditions last week. For a change! Says spearfishing scribe Jason Heyne.

The diving conditions last week were slightly above average with good weather . Big queen mackerel and ambers are coming out. Saturday a moderate northeast was forecast and played out with  a 1.6m swell running. Sunday the northeast wind was up early morning with a light offshore blowing switching to a light onshore later on with a 1.7m swell running. Viz was reported north and south. Club merit fish of last week went to Dylan with his 1st yellow fin tunny and fish of the week goes to Neil with his pending SA record amber! As always dive safe and straight spears.
