KZN Spearfishing News by Jason Heyne

KZN Spearfishing News by Jason Heyne

“The ever reliable Jason Heyne reports in weekly with a round up of KZN spearfishing news…this week is  no different, some great catches and good photos, thank you Jason!”

Diving this week has been on and off with early starts required due to the north east picking up every day and this weekend will be no exception. The North East will steadily pick up Saturday and Sunday with the surf picking up and obliterating the inshore come Sunday. Best bet for a dive is early Saturday morning through till mid day Saturday. The best viz has been in and around the middle south coast. Garrick are returning now in shoals so stick to the shallows for a while to bag one. DUC Garrick comp is on tomorrow no weigh in after 4. Guys and gals please be careful where you park your vehicle on the north coast as cars are being stolen and broken into. Try not to stash your keys. As always dive safe and straight spears.

“Enjoy the picture show…”

Jason Heyne weekly spearfishing report for KZN

Jason Heyne weekly spearfishing report for KZN

Over to Jason Heyne for last weeks spearfishing report for KZN…

“Conditions have been surprisingly good this week with the sea settling nicely on Thursday and Friday and the 1.6m swell predicted didn’t really put in an appearance. Predictions for Saturday look great and there is good viz in the middle south coast area. Sunday a moderate north east is predicted to blow early on the south coast and later on the north coast. Keep looking for those daga salmon and garrick as they are around and the white mussel cracker are definitely shoaling. Far north coast the queen mackerel are about in numbers with some fair size sharks and even Orcas putting in an appearance at Sodwana. Our prizes for the species comp on the 31st of October are shaping up nicely with a pair of freedivers carbon blades with foot pockets, a custom freedivers wetsuit and a night at Mcgintys lodge and boat charter for a day at sodwana lined up! As always dive safe and straight spears. “

Many thanks Jason!

The weeks spearfishing news with Jason Heynes

The weeks spearfishing news with Jason Heynes

From the ever reliable Mr. Jason Heynes…the week underwater, up and down the KZN coastline.

“Sea conditions have been average this week but some big winter fish are putting in an appearance. Big daga salmon on the wrecks and brusher (white musselcracker) in the Durban area. Well done Drew, Ashley, Garret, Markus and Gerhaad on landing great fish this week. The better viz was on the south coast with north reported at 4 to 6m. A cold front has moved in but conditions should improve by Sunday with the south west dropping off Saturday and swell dropping off to 1.4 m come Sunday. As always dive safe and straight spears. ”

KZN Spearfishing Report

Average diving conditions this week with a bit of swell churning the inshore up. Lower south coast and the kei have been very clean. Decent size garrick are coming out north and south coast. Snoek middle south coast and north coast. A big cuda was lost on the lower south coast and I managed to plant a decent shot in a large wahoo today but after stripping the gun reel and 2m off the belt reel it came off. Tricky fish to land! There is a buster of a north east predicted early Saturday morning with some swell. South coast will probably be diveable come Sunday. Guys and gals please be aware that there is a dead whale at zinkwazi attracting some very large sharks so please don’t dive in the area! Alex from the club had a 3m great white come have a look at his crayfish skills at umtwalume this morning. We had a great club meeting last night and the revamped club champs trophy was presented to Andrew Mcdonald. Thanks Dylan for the great work! As always dive safe and straight spears.

Conditions for diving this week have been above average with garrick on the south coast and plenty snoek up north. ..and daga salmon coming out north and south coast. If the north east drops off tonight conditions on the south coast should be good Saturday and Sunday with not much wind forecast and below average swell size. North coast might be clean enough come Sunday. The garrick have been getting bigger with some decent sub 20 kg fish being shot. Daga salmon up to 35kg and snoek up to 9 kg. Remember if you are looking for the bigger snoek swim out a bit deeper. Well done Garret on getting a decent size black musselcracker. Good luck and straight spears everyone.

Many thanks and kudos to Jason Heyne for getting this report to us each week.
