The weeks spearfishing by Jason Heyne

The weeks spearfishing by Jason Heyne

We had great sea conditions up till mid Monday then it literally went pear shaped. ..decent size cold front bringing with it much needed rains to the north coast where water restrictions have been in place for a while now. Not so good for diving. Umhlanga river is open as are a number of rivers on the south coast all spewing brown muddy water into the sea. A huge low pressure cell is predicted to arrive late Saturday bringing more rain and 3 to 4m swell so get in some family time this weekend or head up to sodwana. The final leg of Natal shore diving champs was held on Saturday with the 1st four places being hotly contested. I managed to take the honours with a great bag of fish. I am still waiting for the final results percentages from day 1 and 2. Thanks captain Chris West for putting it all together and it’s an absolute honour to now have my name on the trophy with all those legends! Kudos to you.

Jason Heyne Dive Report for KZN

Jason Heyne Dive Report for KZN

Jason Heyne is our man on the underwater scene – he has been patrolling the waters of the KZN coastline for decades now and knows all the nooks and crannies, kooks and nannies and everyone in on the dive scene. Thanks Jason!

Awesome sea conditions this week with the best viz on the south coast up to 25m! Garrick are still hunting the points and shoals of Queen mackerel are patrolling a bit deeper. The daga salmon have been around with some trophy fish being shot. Well done to AJ on getting his first daga salmon weighing in at a respectable 35 kg! The weather and sea conditions are looking great for Saturday with a 1.2m swell running and light variable winds. Sunday the swell picks up to 1.4m with a light south Wester blowing. The second and final day of the Natal Shorediving champs is being held on Saturday with the weigh in at PWC (DUC)16H00. Good luck!

Spinner Tackle for Mydos in Richards Bay

Submitted by: Sean Lange

Report:

Spinner Tackle for Mydos in Richards Bay (NOT ANY LONGER)

Richard sold Spinner Tackle in Meerensee, Richards Bay, had stock of the super duper Mydo Luck Shot Mini, in sizes 1 and 2. The smaller size weighs in at a tiny 0.7 ounces, so you can accurately flick your plastic anywhere you want it, even in the wind. Rig it weedless with one of MacArthy’s new plastics and you can work a shipwreck if you can find one!

Mydos were  in Richards Bay: Spinner Tackle have stock of the all-new Mydo Luck Shot Mini – ideal for spinning in that naturally beautiful Richards Bay estuary.

The bigger number 2 is almost 3 ounces and is best suited to casting for daga salmon. Fitted with nice fat plastic from

Natal Shore Dive Champs, easterlies and big swells

Natal Shore Dive Champs, easterlies and big swells

IMG-20150710-WA0004
Natal Shore Dive Champs, easterlies and big swells: and in the meantime, this huge jobfish/kakaap…

The sea conditions have not been great this week with very few fish coming out. Big swell and variable wind direction has turned the sea into a washing machine. The forecast for Saturday is not good with a 15 knt plus northeast blowing and up to 2m swell. Swell and wind drop Sunday morning with a south Wester picking up in the afternoon. The natal shore dive champs got off to a good start on Saturday and a little birdie told me that after the first day there’s not much points difference between positions 1 through to 4. The second dive day has been moved to next weekend due to the sea conditions not being favourable this weekend.

Where are the sardines 2015?

Where are the sardines 2015?

The word in the carpark, up and down the KZN coastlines is that we should not give up hope, for a second coming, of sardines this year.

Where are the sardines 2015?
Where are the sardines 2015? Jay Steenkamp took this shot of the first few nets being thrown successfully, in the beginning of the season.

In fact, today brought with it an entirely new ocean, with lovely polished swells coming out of the south, a stiff offshore breeze, and most excitingly, birds. Gannets and terns were buzzing the bay off Port Shepstone, some deep diving going on. It was too difficult to see what exactly had the birds so piqued, but they in turn, attracted no less than 7 boats, from the Shelley Beach ski-boat competition, being run out of there, this week. Looking for a big ‘couta, or live bait, to start with…it’s been many a moon since we saw so many boats on the backline. Looked like the couta seasons back when there still were some couta left around here (they have been spotted, in numbers, in the Meditaranean, in case you were getting worried).

Environmentally we have all the right conditions forecast, to bring the sea temperature down (howling easterlies predicted for this week), and then to come through with big seas, from the south – this is the front that brings us our strongest chance of netting a few more sards.

So, later in July and early August, and sometimes they even only come through in September!?
