Fans of Crocworld Conservation Centre’s monthly environmental talks are in for a treat on May 14th, when renowned ornithologist David Allan will become the latest in the park’s long line of influential speakers. Entitled ‘Birds of Prey – New Frontiers in our Knowledge and Identification”, Allan’s talk promises to carry on the series’ tradition of celebrating the fascinating flora and fauna of Southern Africa.

In his talk, Allan will give guests an insight into two of his most recent field trips. On the first of these trips, Allan helped several esteemed ornithologists from overseas to document the presence of a bird of prey only recently recorded for the first time in Southern Africa. On the second, he joined a team investigating the status of a rare bird of prey in Zululand – and it is tales of these fascinating exploits that will form the core of his talk on May 14th.

Allan will also explore the new developments that have allowed scientists to better understand the status of southern African raptors, and to more easily identify one species from the next. In particular, he will go into detail regarding the Bateleur Eagle, Zululand’s Southern Banded Snake Eagles, and the identification of buzzard species throughout the region. With several decades of birding experience under his belt, no-one is more qualified to talk on this subject than Allan.

Allan’s illustrious career in ornithology began whilst working for the Percy FitzPatrick Institute for African Ornithology and the Avian Demography Unit, both at the University of Cape Town. After moving to Durban over 20 years ago, he joined the Durban Natural Science Museum – where he now works as the Curator of Birds. Allan has authored and co-authored several books on birds of prey, the most recent of which is entitled Geographical Variation of Southern African Birds.

Crocworld Conservation Centre General Manager Martin Rodrigues is excited to welcome Allan to the park, saying “David Allan is a fantastic speaker and a real expert in ornithology. It is always such an honour and a privilege to have an individual of his calibre speak as part of our conservation talk program”. Rodrigues goes on to encourage guests to book swiftly for Allan’s talk, which promises to be one of the most popular yet.

The talk will begin at 9:00am on May 14th, although guests are asked to arrive at 8:30am for registration. Allan will speak for approximately one hour, after which there will be time for questions before tea and coffee are served. Tickets for the talk are priced at R75 per adult, and R35 for pensioners and scholars. All tickets include entrance into the Centre, and guests are warmly invited to stay after the talk and explore the park’s amazing reptile and bird displays.

Those that wish to make a day of it may purchase lunch from on-site restaurant Le Rendez-Vous, while Inzinyoni Indigenous Nursery is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in horticulture. The nursery is located on the grounds of Crocworld Conservation Centre and open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 08h00 until 13h00. To ensure a place for Allan’s talk, guests are kindly asked to confirm bookings in advance.

KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime – by Jason Heyne

KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime – by Jason Heyne

And we have Jason Heyne delivering the news every spearo is gasping for! It’s ON! KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime is what we live for! Winter conditions are gonna blanket our beautiful east coastline with idyllic conditions – offshores every morning, clean water  and calm surf…and coming soon to a beach near you – sardines!

Ok, over to Jason Heyne, telling it like it is…

“Sea conditions have really improved this week especially along the south coast the problem is cold water has moved in in places so finding warmer water is key. The weather conditions this weekend are great with a light north east on Saturday and 1.4m swell running and a light south west blowing Sunday with a 1.2m swell running. Wahoo are on the Aliwal shoal with big tropical yellow tail on the deeper pinnacles. Queen mackerel are inshore in the warmer water with daga salmon and blood snapper out deeper. White mussel cracker have arrived on the south coast. Best viz is on the south coast from Umkomaas down. Both Saturday and Sunday are looking really good for a dive. As always dive safe and straight spears. ”

light the fire

The second annual Light the Fire lifestyle biking event has a non-stop line-up of familiarisation trips which will take a number of VIP guests to the tourism hotspots of the South Coast from Thursday 28 April to Saturday 30 April.

“This will be a forerunner to the main Light the Fire event which runs from 30 April to 1 May,” explained event organiser, Sinethemba Dhlomo of Integrated Concepts. “This will give us an opportunity to showcase the amazing venues, sights and activities on offer in and around the Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom.”

Participants of the familiarisation tourism excursions will include the main sponsors – the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development Tourism & Environmental Affairs and Tourism KZN, among others – as well as VIP celebrity bikers, Motorcycle Club (MCC) presidents, media and other invited stakeholders.

On Thursday 28 April, visitors will get to experience the Wild Swing at the top of Lehr’s Waterfall where bungee jumping or ziplining 165m over Oribi Gorge will start the weekend with a serious adrenaline rush. This will be followed by a game drive, or horse ride for the adventurous, at Lake Eland Game Reserve and brunch at Leopard Rock overlooking a quintessentially African view. The day will ease off with a sunset boat cruise, snorkelling, jet skiing and shark cage diving at Shelly Beach and sundowners at the upmarket Stages Restaurant & Lounge, promising 270-degree ocean views from Port Shepstone’s beachfront.

Day two will have a gentler start with breakfast at Mac Banana, a unique shopping, food and entertainment destination with a fantastic Lifestyle Centre. Here visitors can stroll through the food emporium, participate in paintball, quad biking and adventure golf or peruse the art gallery and animal farm. The day’s highlight will be a mass charity ride to Gamalakhe Sports’ Ground to hand over a cheque to the Gamalakhe Community Development Foundation which assists the local community with uniforms, school shoes, tertiary fees, career training and business opportunities. Ending off the day will be a fantastic rooftop pool party at Hillbillion Estate where guests can enjoy a complimentary three-course dinner, welcome drinks and Top DJ line up to start off the lifestyle entertainment of Light the Fire 2016.

The following two days will be a spectacular motoring extravaganza with a motorcycle manufacturer exhibition, custom bikes show and shine, spinning and stunt area, drifting, kids’ action zone, motorcycle club village, novice and advanced riding demonstrations, live stage music and other entertainment all staged at the scenic Dezzi Raceway, Marburg in Port Shepstone. There will also be amazing spinning, wheelies and stunts by Seipei ‘Biker Queen’ Mashugane, Alfred ‘King Donut’ Matamela, Brian Capper and other MCC riders. A much anticipated race is the spectacular showdown of bike vs car with Africa’s fastest brother, Gugu Zulu, behind the wheel of a Backdraft Racing Cobra. There will also be a VIP precinct offering upmarket hospitality for the signature biker lifestyle including cigar and whiskey lounge, photo booth, sushi bar and prize giveaways.

Spearfishing report for KZN

Spearfishing report for KZN

A very bad start to April conditions. The coast has been hammered by big surf. Guys launching from DUC have been getting fish. Surf is set to pick up to 2.5m Friday night dropping off during the day Saturday with not much wind. Sunday morning is looking better with a light north east blowing through the day and the surf drops to 1.5m. There is viz Ballito area and middle south coast area. Please be careful if you try Saturday morning. Big surf can be life threatening. Snoek have been a bit ellusive and king mackerel are still north. As always dive safe and straight spears.

“Thank you Jason Heyne for the weekly report”
